Voice pilot activity update in South Wales Initial PSTN migrations are focussed on South Wales in a project called Pathfinder. These small scale migrations will provide valuable learning and help prepare for larger scale migrations. The migration of the first three exchanges in South Wales is now complete and customer feedback indicates that few customers noticed material issues during the migration process. 2240 lines were successfully migrated in the early hours of 6th November 2008 in Nelson. Only four percent of customers in Nelson experienced continuing issues post migration. All reported issues have been resolved. Work continues to plan for additional migration activities in 2009.
The next exchange to be migrated is Penarth on 22nd January 2009 which will be the first exchange that has Marconi network equipment installed - as opposed to Ericsson equipment used in earlier exchange migrations. This is more commonly referred to as a 'System X' exchange. We'll provide you with further updates on progress in future newsletters. Providers with voice service customers in this area of South Wales have been advised.

Next generation broadband update Work continues apace to enable a number of exchanges around the country for next generation broadband with around four to five exchanges being enabled every day. There is a 15% coverage now and the programme is on track to achieve 40% by April 2009.
Next generation Ethernet update Next generation Ethernet has now been rolled out to 110 nodes and the programme is on track to achieve a coverage of 600 nodes by April 2009 - with around 300 nodes expected to be available in January. These nodes will be located in geographically dispersed exchanges across the UK. |

Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) compatibility testing update We have received a number of enquiries regarding equipment that is indirectly connected to the BT network - such as PCs for example. For your information, only equipment that is directly linked to the BT network needs to be tested - for example ADSL modems and routers are directly connected to the BT network and therefore a representative sample needed to be tested. You may be aware from previous newsletters that testing on modems and routers is well advanced and to date no major issues have been experienced. In fact, having tested all of the major chipsets, we are satisfied there are no significant issues with ADSL modems and routers. So in summary, equipment that sits behind a modem or modem/router will continue to operate post 21CN migration as long as the modem or modem/router is compatible.
For more information on the CPE testing programme go to www.switchedonuk.org/business/how/compatibility. You can also listen to a recent update call held on the programme in November 2008
Like to hear more 21CN updates on a call? The Consult21 team in BT will be running a 21CN quarterly update call on 23 January 2009 to coincide with the next issue of the deployment strategy plan - the overall programme plan for 21CN. We will be sending an invitation for this separately but if you would like to register in the meantime please email helen.nurse@bt.com. We will provide you with a summary of the updates in the plan in the next issue of this newsletter.
And finally the switched-on team would like to wish you all the best for the festive season. |
